Review:2 Brilliant Goals,a unenjoyable Match.

MOHUNBAGAN 1-1 EASTBENGAL
I-League:The 338th Kolkata derby came to an end with both sides sharing a point in the encounter. Mohun Bagan held East Bengal to a 1-1 draw in a round three I-League clash played at the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata, on Saturday.
Ranti Martins found the breakthrough to give the Red and Golds the lead in the 63rd minute but only for Cornell Glen to score the equaliser in the 77th minute. Sanjoy Sen,the coach of the defending champions Mohun Bagan made just one change from their 4-2 victory over Salgaocar as Haitian sensation Sony Norde arrived to replace Balwant Singh out wide.

East Bengal on the other hand, made wholesale changes from their drab stalemate at Cooperage last weekend.Biswajit Bhattacharya drafted in Bheke,Saumik,Rafique and Ruidas as he opted for youthful exuberance over experience.
The high-octane encounter started off with both sides going forward a couple of times but failing to gain momentum. The first real chance was created by Norde in the 11th minute on the flank after Pronay's pass found him.The winger tried to slide it through to Glen but Arnab Mondal came to the rescue with a clearance.
East Bengal’s first shot on target came in the 16th minute when Arnab jumped over teammate Ranti Martins to head the ball straight into Debjit’s hands from a corner-kick.
Both left wingers Baikash Jairu and Norde impressed in the first half for their respective teams. The Sikkim-born Jairu played quite a few influential balls down the flank, beating his marker Pritam Kotal on numerous occasions.
Norde on the other hand, failed to convert from set-pieces but was brilliant on the counter.Just before the break,Sony made a run down the left to cross it to Glen whose tame header was straight into the hands of Rehenesh TP. The last piece of action before the half-time whistle was when Ranti Martins was overlapped by Ruidas who sent in a delectable cross from the right flank.Do Dong Hyun was right in front of goal but the Korean missed a chance sending his header wide.
The second period started off with reinvigorated passion among both the teams.Mohun Bagan were awarded a corner straight away but Sony failed to make much from it. Five minutes in,Glen made a run that freed his from Bello Rassaq and had a shot on target saved by Rehenesh after he was found by a pin-point through ball from Katsumi.
A minute later,Bagan were on the receiving end of an attack as their defence was in shambles.Dong Hyun was allowed to take a shot on goal, but saw his effort acrobatically saved by Debjit.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 63rd minute by East Bengal. The impressive Jairu made a run in from the left to chip the ball to an unmarked Ranti. The Mariners defence was caught napping when the Nigerian half-volleyed the ball into the bottom left corner.
Bagan restored parity in the 77th minute as Sony finally came good from a free-kick. The Haitian chose to drop it into the box instead of going for goal.Glen headed in a bullet as Rehenesh’s fingers could not stop the net from bulging. Since the goal, Norde was hard to stop in midfield, creating problems for the East Bengal back-line.
In the 84th minute,Dong Hyun almost gave his side the lead after he won a free-kick from about 25 yards out,but it was just over the target, allowing Debjit to breathe a sigh of relief.
Into added time, Bagan had a glorious chance to win the encounter after Jeje's smart ball from the right found Cornell in space but the Trinidad man could only head it straight towards Rehenesh who pulled off a smart save. The danger wasn't averted however with Norde lurking but Bheke was on hand to acrobatically clear the danger.
The season's first I-League derby ended all square but Bhattacharya will be the unhappier of the two coaches, seeing how his wards dominated the match for large chunks of time.
Sanjoy Sen will have a lot to mull over as his team did not play to the best of their abilities and were lucky to come away with a point.
